Pune: A meeting of Christians representing various denominations here on Sunday has expressed strong resentment against the increasing cases of attacks against the community including the recent alleged gang-rape of a nun in West Bengal.
The meeting, presided over by Bishop Dabre, has decided to hold a peaceful protest on the city streets next week to register the community’s strong protests against the attacks. Church of North India’s Pune Bishop Andrew Rathod and Bishop Naresh Ambala also spoke at the meeting.
Expressing his anguish over the attack on the churches and members of the Christian community, Bishop Dabre said that these incidents were beyond tolerance and the Christians need to make their resentment known to the authorities.
The others who spoke on the occasion included Sr Diana, former Pune provincial of the Jesus and Mary congregation; Fr Wilfred Fernandes, Fr Denis Joseph, Sr Diana, Judith Menezes, Michael Sathe and Manuel D’Souza.
This was the third meeting convened by Bishop Dabre at Bishop Valerian Hall of St Patrick’s Cathedral parish to discuss the response of the Christians to the spate of attacks against the community. The meeting was attended by a large number of people belonging to the Catholic and Protestant denominations, nuns and priests.
Bishop Dabre also called on the Christians to hold prayers and observe a fast to seek an end to the persecution of the Christians in the country.
He said that a workshop of leaders of the community will also be held to sensitise them on the issue.
